Restraints and Occupant Protection

Armstrong's consultants investigate and analyze vehicle restraints and occupant protection. Restraints, including airbags that inflate to cushion an impact, are designed to keep an occupant from hitting hard surfaces inside a vehicle during an accident.

Restraints fall into three categories — active restraints (manual seat belts), passive restraints (airbags, automatic seat belts), and other restraints (steering wheels, consoles, etc.). Effective analysis of these systems can provide data related to an accident investigation or reconstruction.

Analysis of restraints and occupant protection includes:

  • Seat belt geometry
  • Seat belt performance and fit
  • Alleged seat belt misuse or non-use
  • Restraint performance
  • Occupant ejection
